Carol Mcleod

d. February 18, 2010

FORT WORTH — Carol McLeod, 88, passed away on February 18, 2010 from pneumonia.        Service: 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Burleson. A reception will follow.        Carol McLeod was born in Burt, Iowa the third of eleven children. She grew up on a farm in Wisconsin and later pursued a business education. After moving to Fort Worth in the mid-1960’s, she worked as a copy holder for a proof reader at Stafford Lowden Printing for 13 years.        While attending school, she met Joseph McLeod and they were married in 1945. Throughout their marriage, the couple lived in several different states due to Joe’s calling to the ministry. They moved to Texas and lived in Fort Worth, Brownwood and Burleson.        Carol had Bulbar polio in 1949, which weakened her legs and twisted her spine. She overcame the effects to walk normally most of her life, until post polio syndrome began to break down her muscles.        The inability to be physically active in her adult life did not diminish her happy spirit and love of life. She collected poetry and copied a favorite poem in the many birthday cards she sent to friends and family. She was an avid reader and a prolific letter writer.        She had a lovely singing voice and played the piano. Carol enjoyed volunteer work in church libraries. She supported many charities, especially missionaries in the field.        When the post polio syndrome limited her mobility, Joe and Carol moved to the Waterford Retirement Home in Fort Worth. After Joe passed away, Carol continued to live there with care from the ladies of Heart and Hands. She particularly appreciated the fine personal care she received from Daphne.        The family would like to thank Dr. Jason Ledbetter and his office for their years of compassionate and considerate care. Many thanks to our dear friends Mary Otto and Lila Prager for their cheerful cards and notes so Carol would receive "real" mail. Our love to Aunt Myrna in Wisconsin for her wonderful newsy letters each and every Saturday… the highlight of mom’s week.        Survivors: children, Barbara Ford and husband Bob Krause, Becky Bownds and partner Tom Rivera, Gerald McLeod and wife Patty, James McLeod and partner Georgette Solito, Debra Muenich and husband Henry, Marilyn DeVere and husband Richard; eleven grand-children, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; five surviving sisters and one surviving brother and two sister-in-laws of Wisconsin.
