BURLESON — Monroe Stewart, 74, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, in his Burleson home. Memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at Springdale Baptist Church, Fort Worth. Monroe was born Dec. 7, 1939, in Grand Haven, Mich. The family moved back to Texas in 1942 and settled in Azle. At age 17 he joined the Navy and was stationed in California and spent 18 months in Guam. He married in 1961 and he and his former wife had two children. In 1968 Monroe joined the Fort Worth Fire Department and received the Firefighter of the Year award in 1984 for rescuing a woman from her burning home. He truly loved being a firefighter. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Survivors: Wife, Sharron Gale Stewart of Burleson; son, Joe W. Stewart and wife, Liz, of Alvarado; daughter, Mona Stewart of Burleson; stepdaughter, Brandy Tone and husband, Jason, of Brock; grandchildren, Whitney, Aubree and Mason Stewart of Alvarado; great-grandsons, Vance, Von and Ferris; brother, Glen Stewart of Maryland; sister, Vertie Howe of Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.
