Derek Jones

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our little brother, Derek Jones. Derek passed away earlier this month at the age of 31 in North Richland Hills, Texas.

Derek was a tall guy who, with his tattoos and facial hair, might have seemed intimidating at first glance. But underneath that tough exterior was someone who gave big hugs and could be incredibly silly and goofy. Much like his mama, he loved giving the people closest to him his own silly names and making up little songs about them.
He always wanted to share the things he loved with the people around him. Whether it was his love of music, anime, his favorite local spots, or his favorite cuisines, he wanted you to experience them and love them like he did. Seeing other people enjoy the things he loved brought him so much joy.

Music was a big part of that. For Derek, it was more than something he listened to—it was a place where he felt at home. Through his friends in the DFW music scene, we have heard countless stories of how he showed up for local bands and supported the musicians he loved. He was often one of the first people to start a mosh pit, bringing his energy and enthusiasm to the room. But he didn’t just love the music; he loved the people, the energy, and the sense of community that came with it.

Derek leaves behind his twin brother, Dylan Jones; his sisters, Selena and Lyndsi Vasquez; his beloved dog, Lilo (Poopers); and many cousins, aunts, and uncles in the Jones and Olivas families. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Olivas Jones; his father, Don Jones; his brother, Joshua M. Vasquez; and his grandparents, Patricio and Maria Gloria Olivas and Dell and Roy King.

A public memorial service will be held on October 3rd at the Haltom Theater in Haltom City, Texas. Local bands will perform in Derek’s honor, with a pause during the afternoon for family and close friends to share memories and speak about his life. Private family services will be arranged, and details will be shared with family members directly.

Derek, the three of us will miss you more than words could ever express. You belong to us, little brother, and we will carry you with us forever. We love you, and you will always be a part of us.
