Doris was born into the home of William Lloyd and Jon Nadine Shirley of Anson, Texas on April 27, 1923. As one of five children growing up on a cotton farm during the depression, she developed a caring and serving nature, and a love of the Lord that guided her life’s direction. Her parents instilled into her the value of education and following God’s leading. That leading brought her to Hardin Simmons University where she prepared for a life of ministry and graduated in 1946. As a student, Doris was the secretary of the University’s Baptist Student Union, where her responsibilities grew to encompass those of director, and included organizing evangelistic programs. It was in this capacity that she began to work in ministry with a young, dynamic fighter pilot with a heart to see the lost world come to know Christ. Their partnership became a lifelong commitment when they married on May 31, 1947. During their 68 years of marriage they served as missionaries in Japan, founded three churches there, and helped thousands come to faith in Christ. Through their pioneering efforts, “Partnership Missions” are now an important part of Christianity all over the world. Doris raised five children, eighteen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Doris had an ability to make everyone she met feel special. She hosted with grace and honor whether she was entertaining the hotel maid, or a Prime Minister. Her heart was for all people. Reflections from Dub: It is a great joy to write down some notes as we give thanks to the Lord for Doris and for almost 100 years of perfect service and commitment to the Lord here, Texas, South Pacific, Asia, Europe and Africa. Wherever she’s been she has been loved by the people, she has shared with them in a way that they have recognized the Lord’s presence at all times. There is no lady I have ever known, and I have traveled around the world, that would equal what Doris has accomplished. We thank the Lord for what He’s done and what he is doing and what she will mean in heaven. She will brighten it up, I don’t know how bright it was going to be in the original plans, but it’s going to be increased when she gets there. We thank the Lord for her. Her family loves her, she loves the family, she is committed to service wherever she is. That means then, now, and in heaven. Thank the Lord for Doris and for all she means to all of us. Much Love, Dub Jackson and Family
