George Stephen Murray

George Stephen Murray, age 76, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022 in Greenville. A long-time resident of Commerce, Texas, he had most recently been a resident of Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he attended Byrd High School and graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana with a degree in music composition. He played French horn and piano, and was also a prolific artist, exhibiting his paintings at Shreveport’s Riverside Gallery. He moved to Texas to be near family in the late 1970’s and received a Master’s degree in English from Texas A & M Commerce, where he worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the English Department, as well as working in the university archives. Stephen was involved in the music ministry playing piano at several area churches through the years, and most recently was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Commerce. He had a kind and gentle heart for all of God’s creatures, and will be missed by his family, friends and community. Stephen is predeceased by his parents, Jack Wallace Murray and Sarah K. Pickett Murray. He is survived by his brother, Jack W. (Jim) Murray, Jr. of Grand Junction, Colorado, and his nephew Jack W. (Tina) Murray, III of Grand Junction Colorado, and his niece Katherine Murray (Porter) Johnston of San Antonio, Texas, as well as three great-nieces. A memorial service will be held at a later date, TBA.
