Janet Rhenee Carruthers was the third of four children born to the union of Earl and Hattie Pettus on March 24, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas. She was the product of two Christian parents and a devout member of St. Paul United Methodist Church from early childhood. Janet was an active member of the church and participated in the choir and Vacation Bible School as a young child. Janet enjoyed a rich family heritage anchored in Christian values. She attended public schools in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Sam Houston High School. She also attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas and Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She served as an educator at several of the public schools in San Antonio. She always had a love for doing hair and eventually attended cosmetology school at Vogue College of Cosmetology in San Antonio, obtaining a license as a cosmetologist. Janet was married in 1971 and later gave birth to her only child, daughter, Tammye. Eventually, she became a single mom who dedicated her life to raising her daughter. She was the troop leader for her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop, she was highly influential and encouraged her daughter to achieve the highest level of education. Janet always could be seen hosting sleepovers for her daughter’s friends. She loved to shop, sew her own clothes, exercise, listen to R&B music, and watch movies. She was a tenacious woman who loved her family with all her heart and soul. She had an infectious laugh and was full of personality. Janet took pride and delight in her daughter and grandchildren. She instilled values into her daughter that will be seen for generations to come. Janet passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents Earl and Hattie Pettus, her brothers, Edward Earl Washington, Earl Nathan Pettus Jr., and Howard Eugene Pettus. She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving daughter Tammye Carruthers Turner, son-in-law Bruce Earl Turner, two grandchildren, Savannah Rhenee Turner, and Bruce Jacob Earl Turner, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of loving relatives and friends. A memorial will be held to celebrate Janet’s life in San Antonio, Texas at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The date and time of service will be on June 30, 2024, at 2:00PM. The address is 508 N. Center St. San Antonio, Texas 78202.
