John Alan Foster

April 16, 1953 — April 18, 2025

Dallas, Texas

Reverend John Alan Foster, 72, met his Lord and savior, Good Friday, April 18, 2025. "Johnny" as childhood friends and family knew him, (Bro. John as his congregations knew him) was born in Monroe, Louisiana, April 16,1953 and passed away in Dallas.

Services will be Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m., at Assembly Christian Church, 3550 West Airline Highway, Reserve, Louisiana 70084.

Johnny was a 1971 graduate of West Monroe High School where he excelled at baseball and football and was voted class Most Handsome, and most of us would agree with that designation. Johnny was #48 on the Rebel football team both his junior and senior years ending up as a defensive back who could “cover pass receivers like a blanket.” He didn’t make mental mistakes. After a near-drowning incident on his senior class trip he dedicated his entire life to the ministry. Instead of accepting a baseball scholarship, he enrolled in Southwestern Assemblies of God Bible College in Waxahachie, Texas, that fall and received his bachelor’s degree in 1975. He received his Master of Divinity from Fort Worth Baptist Theological Seminary in 1986.

In his early ministry, Bro. John and Bro. Doug Lowenberg led a group of 400-500 teens and mostly college-age young people in the French Quarter in New Orleans who served Christ. They even took a small group of them to preach the Gospel in Eastern Europe behind the “Iron Curtain” in Communist countries for almost an entire month.

He married his soulmate and life partner Donna Sue Hutchinson Foster, June 30,1984 in Houma, Louisiana. Together they ministered to congregations living the life he promised he would. He was the pastor of Living Water Assembly of God in Pearl, Mississippi, associate pastor and principal at First Assembly of God in New Iberia, Louisiana, pastor at Winnfield Assembly of God in Winnfield, Louisiana and finally at Laplace Assembly of God in Laplace, Louisiana.

His proudest role in life was being father to his two sons Joseph and Joshua and Papaw to his eight grandchildren. Johnny coached both sons in baseball and both went on to play in college. He loved camping with them, teasing them and laughing with them.

Johnny made sure his sons knew the truth was found in the Bible. He would point them to God. Every time they asked him for advice on a tough situation or a big decision he would say, “Pray about it.” It was frustrating sometimes when they just wanted him to tell them what to do. He wanted them to build that relationship with God for themselves and to make the habit of depending on him for answers instead of their dad because he knew he wouldn’t always be here on this earth.

After retirement, Johnny and Donna moved to Grand Prairie, Texas to care for his aunt and uncle who had been unwavering supporters of his life of ministry.

He is preceded in death by his beloved mother Charlene Barnes Foster Dunn, his father J.N. Foster, his maternal grandparents Charles R. Barnes, senior and Eula Zeigler Barnes, all of West Monroe, Louisiana and his aunt Marilyn Barnes Tidwell of Grand Prairie, Texas.

He is survived by his wife Donna, sons Joseph Nathaniel Foster (Andrea) and their children Olivia, Cortland, Adeline and Haven of Haslett, Texas; Joshua Paul Foster (Gayla) and their children Joseph, Hanna, Karleigh and Brooks of Vestavia, Alabama; Uncle Fermon Tidwell of Grand Prairie, Texas; brother William Atlee Foster (Linda) of West Monroe, Louisiana and their children. Rodger Lindsey, DVM and Rusty McCoy were cherished, lifelong friends.

Memorials may be made in memory of Bro. John Foster to Assembly Christian Church, 3550 West Airline Highway, Reserve, Louisiana 70084 or text 84321 to give.
