John “Gary” Ashworth was born on January 25, 1952, to Forney John Ashworth, Jr. and Mildred Richardson Ashworth at Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He passed away in North Richland Hills, Texas on March 10, 2026.
Gary spent his early years in Atlanta, attending Sky Haven Elementary School and graduating from Walker High School in 1970. The following year his birthdate was the number two pick for the Vietnam war draft. To keep from being sent directly to the war, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy to “see the world.” He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, on the USS Mount Whitney, where for two years of active duty he traveled the Mediterranean Sea. Gary told many stories of being stationed on that ship. It was a journey he would never forget.
After being released from active duty, he was sent to Texas to begin his four years in the Naval Reserve. His mother and stepfather, Jack Price, had moved from Atlanta to Arlington, Texas, along with his sister Terri. Gary began working part time at Arlington Memorial Hospital and continued his college education at Tarrant County Junior College and The University of Texas at Arlington.
Gary’s career continued in hospitals where he was Director of Environmental Services in Kansas, Oklahoma and later in Texas. As he got older, he worked in assisted living and rehabilitation facilities adding Director of Dietary Services to his resume. For many years during retirement his favorite job was working as a seasonal associate at Texas Stadium for all Texas Ranger games.Gary loved participating and following all types of sports. Growing up in Georgia, he was a fan of the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Tech. When living in Texas, he cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers and The University of Texas at Austin.Gary was the life of the party. He had so many friends, from people he knew from kindergarten to new people he had just met. He loved getting to know someone and was interested in what they had to say. Gary was always happy and loved to laugh and joke around.
Music was very important to Gary. He loved jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and country, but he really loved having any type of music on most of the time. During the last years of his life, you would find him sitting in his recliner with his boombox playing one of his hundreds of cassettes and CDs. He would just be sitting back reminiscing about his life, listening to his music.
He was predeceased by his dad, Forney John “Bud” Ashworth, Jr.; brother, Steve Ashworth Sr.; stepfather, Jack Price; and mother, Mildred “Millie” Price.
He is survived by his sister, Terri Ashworth Jutras and brother-in-law, Michael Jutras of Colleyville, Texas; sister-in-law, Suzanne Walden Ashworth O’Neal (Bobby) of Cumming, Georgia; stepbrother, Jim Price (Cathy) of Sun City West, Arizona; and stepbrother, Tom Price (Toni) of Blairsville, Georgia.
