Peter Garland, 86, passed away on April 15, 2026, at his home in Granbury, Texas. He was a brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Garland, and his wife of 62 years, Sallie Anne Garland.
He is survived by his brother, Paul (Anne) Garland; his children, Ellen (Tegan) Brennen and Steven (Jennifer) Garland; his grandchildren, Shelby (Jeremy) Adams, Avery Brennen, and Elye Garland; his great-grandchild, Stevie Adams; and his cat, Garfield.
Born in Rochester, New York, Peter attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Retail in 1961. He lived in Rochester until 1969, when he moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas for better job opportunities. He worked in retail for many years before opening a boutique specializing in full-figured women’s clothing.
He enjoyed walking, swimming in the lake, playing Euchre, and making homemade pizza every Sunday night, a tradition he started when he met Sallie and continued into his 80s. He also spent time working in his yard, mowing, trimming trees, and maintaining the sprinkler system for his wife’s garden. Family remained important to him throughout his life. He made sure that the family took a vacation each year, whether it was a simple camping trip to Arkansas or Colorado in the early years or later traveling to upstate New York to visit relatives.
He also embraced technology at a time when many his age did not and was especially skilled with his iPad.
He was a member of Granbury Historic Preservation Commission for several years and helped support efforts to maintain the town’s historic character and small-town feel, as it was when he and his wife moved there in 1988.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Granbury, Texas on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 303 W. Bridge St., Granbury, Texas 76048.
